It seems reasonable to expect that an upcoming episode of Succession will be focused on Shiv… and directed by Tarantino.
Highlight from last week? Definitely the time spent with my daughter on her birthday hike, enjoying views like this one.
Finished reading: Empire Falls by Richard Russo 📚
Occasionally working my way back through Pulitzer winners, and other notable books, from the season of life when I didn’t really read much literary fiction. This one affirmed that I’m glad to be reading more literary fiction now.
Finished reading: You Are Not Your Own by Alan Noble 📚
One of those rare books that challenged me to consider new directions in my thinking. Got a lot from it, but also think I’d get a lot more from reading it again down the road.
Finished reading: Algorithms to Live By by Brian Christian 📚
In other seasons, I might have found this more engaging. In this season, I did not. Heavy on skimming, and lean on the highlights.
A Book to Consider: Stolen Focus - Trellis
If you struggle to find time to read books, maybe a book about focus would be a good place to start.
Looking forward to the pairing of Wayne Randazzo and Mark Gubicza calling games for the Angels this year. ⚾️
Finished reading: Unteachable Lessons by Carl McColman 📚
Not quite what I expected or hoped for, but at least found it interesting enough to finish.
Finished reading: Stolen Focus by Johann Hari 📚
I’ve read a lot of books around this theme, dating back to The Shallows. Out of all of them, this is the one that I’ll be recommending when others are struggling with their own attention and focus.
Shohei Ohtani home run ball is shared by Japanese fans
This is delightful. I can’t imagine it would happen in the United States, but I wish it would. ⚾️
Finished reading: Silence and Beauty by Makoto Fujimura 📚
I probably should have looked into this a little more before I started reading. I expected it to be about the practice of silence, and not the famous Japanese novel. It’s been ~15 years since I read the novel, so that limited my engagement.
Consortio Dei podcast #21: Geoff Holsclaw
Really fun to talk with my friend Geoff about the relationship between neurology and spiritual formation.
Happy with the results of this weekend’s project — finished building a simple cabinet for our 3D printer in my office closet.
Pleasant realization today that the pieces were already in place to access my Obsidian ‘Writing’ folder from IA Writer on my iPad for a little more of a focused writing space.
I’ve been backing up my vault to a Github repo, so I can use Working Copy pull that repo, and then open it in IA Writer.
Finished reading: The Courage to Be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi 📚
I don’t like the format of books that try to frame big concepts into narrative dialogue between wise sage and learner…so that was hard to get past. That said, there are some thoughful ideas in here that I’m mulling.
A weekend well spent included adding these display shelves above my writing desk. And now the outcome is a morning well spent…
Finished reading: Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel 📚
I usually prefer fiction where I feel more engaged with the characters, but enjoyed this storyline. I’ve read Station Eleven, but enjoyed this one enough to prioritize reading The Glass Hotel as well.
