I like exploring different regions and processes and such with my coffee, but if I were marooned with a shipload of this, I’d be content. ☕️

Finished reading: A Non-Anxious Presence by Mark Sayers 📚

I’ve read most of his books, and appreciated them all. This one didn’t meet expectations, but perhaps that’s because they were high. But I appreciate that Edwin Friedman’s writings continue to be considered, and find new audiences.

This galaxy is feeling a little crowded.

Finished reading: The Creative Act by Rick Rubin 📚

It was fine, I guess. Actually, I think it was probably pretty good, but I’ve read so many books of this type, I’m kind of inoculated against them. I expected that going in, but I couldn’t help myself.

Finished reading: Rules of Civility by Amor Towles 📚

I determined to read back through his previous books after reading The Lincoln Highway last year. And now that I’ve read those, I consider anything he writes to be must read for me. Gliding prose, and engaging development of characters.

A rule is a way of structuring awareness.

With new music that I like, I usually show rigorous self-discipline in listening only once a day, so I don’t burn out on them.

But with The First Two Pages of Frankenstein, I have no such restraint. 🎵

Happy The National release day to all who celebrate. 🎶

Scythe — second play since we got it at Christmas

It seems reasonable to expect that an upcoming episode of Succession will be focused on Shiv… and directed by Tarantino.

Highlight from last week? Definitely the time spent with my daughter on her birthday hike, enjoying views like this one.

Finished reading: Empire Falls by Richard Russo 📚

Occasionally working my way back through Pulitzer winners, and other notable books, from the season of life when I didn’t really read much literary fiction. This one affirmed that I’m glad to be reading more literary fiction now.

Finished reading: You Are Not Your Own by Alan Noble 📚

One of those rare books that challenged me to consider new directions in my thinking. Got a lot from it, but also think I’d get a lot more from reading it again down the road.

Finished reading: Algorithms to Live By by Brian Christian 📚

In other seasons, I might have found this more engaging. In this season, I did not. Heavy on skimming, and lean on the highlights.

I never tire of Parks.

A Book to Consider: Stolen Focus - Trellis

If you struggle to find time to read books, maybe a book about focus would be a good place to start.

Looking forward to the pairing of Wayne Randazzo and Mark Gubicza calling games for the Angels this year. ⚾️

Finished reading: Unteachable Lessons by Carl McColman 📚

Not quite what I expected or hoped for, but at least found it interesting enough to finish.

Finished reading: Stolen Focus by Johann Hari 📚

I’ve read a lot of books around this theme, dating back to The Shallows. Out of all of them, this is the one that I’ll be recommending when others are struggling with their own attention and focus.
